For some reason I find it incredibly irritating when people use ‘ano’ or ‘eeto’ at the beginning of an English sentence, phrase, comment, etc.

I understand switching languages if there’s a word you don’t know, or doesn’t work as well as another word in another language, but English has a perfect equivalent.

It’s ‘um’.

There’s no need to use the Japanese. It’s just irritating.

  1. The Letter Q says:

This is a very agreeable statement. I despise it when people try to mix English and Japanese for the sake of better fitting into the anime clique. When it occurs around me, I start speaking Swedelish for the sake of being antagonistic.

  2. Adrienne says:

I’m not into anime, but they do it in the Japanese rock fandom too! ALL THE TIME. I don’t really understand why… I mean, it doesn’t make you look any smarter, or like a better fan. It doesn’t make it look like you know Japanese (it actually makes you look linguistically confused…).
Hahaha, I wish I could do something like that, but unfortunately I only know English and Japanese.
I’m glad to know it bothers other people.
