S-T Ranting

// August 17th, 2008 // 11 Comments » // Blog

I realized that it’s sad how much I talk about work, haha. But for now, that’s all that’s terribly interesting.

But now there’s something I have to talk about before I make another campground related post. According to Ernie, someone is accusing me of taking news from them without giving them credit.

.

.

.

You know what? Fuck you. Why would I go out of my way to steal news when I can get it myself? No really, why? I don’t trust other people’s translations easily (no offence, but there are a lot of people in the fandom who translate with limited knowledge and using online translators. That’s not a criticism, but I try to make sure I do my best work on S-T). And just really, why would I do that?

People like knowing that they’ve contributed to something. We want S-T to go somewhere, and people like to feel included. Therefore, given the chance, we’re going to include them. Especially when it comes to crediting them. I mean really, I hate when people take stuff from me without giving me credit for it, so why would I do that to someone else?

Does that make sense? No. It doesn’t.

Anyways enough of that bullshit. If people want to be like that, then that’s fine. It’s just so frustrating because I bust my ass over on Shattered-Tranquility. I really do. You should see my poor computer and all it’s hooked-up-ness to mail magazines, OHP’s, feeds and so on and so forth. It’s like, you do all this work for what? People calling you a thief and a liar. Which is fine if you are, but I’m not. :/

I hope Ernie writes back. But maybe it’s best if he doesn’t. I hate drama.

Insert something about campers here.

Oh my goodness. Today was definitely an ‘August-y’ day at the campground.

It’s not that there were a lot of really weird people, but it just had that vibe of ‘wtf-ness’ going around. I don’t know how to explain it. I’m making two posts. Because this story deserves it’s own.

But I can start with a story of something that did happen which made me livid. If you haven’t realized, I like the word livid. It’s funy to say and usually when I use it it’s the ‘I’m shaking because I’m so anxious and angry’ sort of feeling.

So yes. I had this lady call and we have a conversation that’s similar to this.

Me: Campground!
Her: What is your policy on pets? What are your restrictions?
Me: Well, what are you camping with?
Her: That’s not what I asked. What is your policy on pets?
Me: … the pet policy depends on the type of unit you come camping with.
Her: Oh okay. We have a class A motorhome. We’re looking at coming in September.
Me: Oh okay. As long as you clean up after them, keep them on a leash and do not leave them unattended, it shouldn’t be a problem.
Her: So your pet restrictions are for cabins?
Me: Yes, we don’t allow any pets inside cabins for allgery reasons and to keep them clean. We also don’t allow pets on tent sites because we’ve had trouble with people leaving their animals outside all day long, alone.
Her: Oh I understand that.

… okay, seems decent so far, right? THEN she goes on this long speech about what our ad in Trailer Life says and how we should change it and how usually it means breed restrictions. We do have breed restrictions, which I should have included in the beginning, but I didn’t. Yes, that’s my fault.

Me: Well, for breeds we don’t accept Pitbulls or Dobermen.
Her: You didn’t say that before.
Me: Honestly, you’re coming in September and it’s not exactly an issue then. The part is very quiet and there aren’t many (if any) children around.
Her: Well it shouldn’t matter what time of year it’s at.

Okay, cut to her CHEWING ME OUT FOR LIKE FIVE MINUTES over how it’s not the breed of dog, it’s unsupervised children. I wish I interrupted her and said something because in general, I AGREE but come on. We’re a family campground and if ONE bad thing happened we’d be screwed. I own a dog, I feel for her! I absolutely love dogs and I always have! She even said she doesn’t have any of those types of dogs, so what does it matter? She was honestly yelling at me over it. I tried to be like, yeah I understand where you’re coming from, but she kept cutting me off.

Then she finishes off with a bitchy, “Well, because of your breed rules we can’t stay there”. Or something.

Okay if you have a problem with it, I understand. But that’s not something you have to take up with me. Did you ask if I was management? No. So what do you think telling me is going to accomplish? Do you really think I’m going report to my boss that some stuck up lady flipped shit because we don’t allow certain breeds which are notorious for attacking people and we have a campground FILLED WITH LITTLE CHILDREN? NO.

I AM NOT.

I HAVE COMMON SENSE.

YOU APPARENTLY DO NOT.

Okay now I feel better.

These two things really annoy me.

// August 12th, 2008 // 1 Comment » // Blog

There are two things that I’m really, really… really tired of.

The first, is campers who don’t get their way and therefore throw a tantrum like a two year old child. Okay, so maybe it doesn’t go quite like that, but people get mad and write ridiculous letters to us and to our headquarters. If people want to make legitimate complaints, that’s totally fine and I can understand. But when they’re ridiculous and they lie in them, that really pisses me off. They make up a completely different story, just to make us look like the bad guys and to make them look like the helpless victim.

It’s like that guy who posted a review about us on this RV Park Reviews website. He gave us a one and made us look bad. But he wouldn’t accept any of our help. We asked him if he wanted to change sites, and he said no. We asked him if he would like all of his money back, so he could find somewhere more suitable to stay, and he said no. There’s not much more that we can do if you don’t want to cooperate whatsoever.

Whatever. People are lame.

The second thing that I’m really tired of is people stealing from Shattered Tranquility. Like, blatantly copy and pasting stuff from us and not giving us any credit. I’ve been finding it all over the place recently. What bothers me most, is when I know someone has taken something from us, but then they change a few words to make it look like they did it themselves.

Come on, that’s just really pathetic. Changing a few things like September to Sept, and 6:00 to 6PM does not mean that you wrote it yourself. Maybe it’s just because people are uneducated and don’t understand what theft and plagarism are. Or maybe they’re just lazy. Maybe they just want all the credit for themselves. I think S-T has been really good at giving credit to people when it’s due. When someone sends in a contact form, we credit them. If we find it on an LJ community, we credit them. So I don’t see why people can’t pay us the same respect.

Yes, the site is a lot of fun and I enjoy working on it. I don’t regret starting it and I don’t plan to give it up any time soon, but at the same time all the people who keep taking shit from us make me want to give up completely.

Oh and P.S. when you post something right after we post it, and it was something that was out weeks ago, we know you took it from us. I know you’re an asshole, so you’re not going to credit us, but I wish you would… or at least stop posting stuff from our site. Your Japanese isn’t that good nor is your English. So you’re not really doing anyone a favour.

That’s all.

I mean, seriously now.

I’m really glad I wasn’t online tonight when the whole fiasco took place.

Hideko filled me in, but I have to say I’m honestly sick and tired of the people who go around crying that we ‘stole the news’ from them.

Okay one. If we were going to steal news, don’t you think we’d be more stealth about it?

Two. Yes. We all dedicate a great chunk of our spare time going around checking all these Japanese artist’s sites and translating from Japanese just to steal from someone else. Does that really make sense?

Three. If people took a look at the site, they’ll notice that we put the credit in the posts. If someone e-mails us in something we say, ‘Thanks to xx’. If we find it on a community, you’ll see it in the source. If we saw it in a community and then went to the OHP to translate it ourselves, you’ll see something like ‘I saw this in the xx community…’.

Four. We want S-T to be a reliable and credible source for news. Since that’s our goal and aspiration, do you really think we’re going to go around stealing from people?

Five. When we know for sure someone has taken from us, we’ll usually call them out. Naturally, we only do this when there’s 100% proof of it. (Like when someone direct links our image, copies and pastes a post with our comments in it or copies and pastes a post, takes out our comments but oddly enough keeps the same typos we had…). Now if we’re going to go around doing this, don’t you think we’d make sure to credit the initial source? Especially when that’s all we ask for?

I don’t go around trolling LiveJournal or various forums to steal from people when I can spend the same amount of time looking through official sites. So yes, maybe someone posts something the same day we do. But when sites are updated, it would make sense that we post about it, as well as other people.

So as a closing note, there are numerous people on this planet who can understand Japanese to some degree. There are numerous people who can access the internet, including band’s official sites. And yes, there are tons of people who rip other people off by not giving them the credit they deserve, but there are also just as many who are happy to credit their sources and I think I can safely say that myself and the rest of the S-T staff are of the latter kind.

I mean honestly, I unjoined some communities on LiveJournal because I knew there were some members who posted in those communities who, if I posted the same thing, would automatically think I stole from them. I don’t want or need that drama and I can find the news on my own, so what’s the point of staying in the community? You know? So I just unjoined.

And before anyone jumps all over me for this, this is not directed to anyone. Just after hearing about what happened, I felt the need to get this out. Every now and then I want to write something like this, but I never do. So it’s nice to finally actually do it.

I hate when people want something for nothing.

Melinda and I were working tonight and this lady comes in with her sons (grandsons? I can’t remember which it was).

She goes up to Melinda and tells her that the boy got a cut on his arm from the fence because he was scaling it (or running against it, or something of that nature).

Then she explains how he can’t go swimming because of it and wants to know what we were going to do about it.

.

.

.

What?

Your kid was stupid enough to get cut on the fence (which he had no reason to be touching to begin with) and you want to know what we are going to do about it?

She (she said he was upset about it, but it was more her than the kid) said the boy couldn’t go swimming now because of the cut. Melinda suggested putting plastic or tape over it. She said she wasn’t going to do that.

Basically, the lady wanted a free hour on the pedal cart to make it up to the boy because he couldn’t swim with the other kids (it’s a public pool and the water is ‘too dirty’. Nevermind the fact Dave shocks the crap out of that thing).

We gave it to her just to get her to go away, more or less. But it bugs me when people do that. It’s not our fault that the kid she was with got cut. He got bandaged up (I’m not sure if Rebekah did it or what) and if we just put something over the bandage he could have easily gone swimming…

She just wanted a free hour on the pedal carts.

Lame.
